What Characteristic Of An Epic Hero Does The Excerpt Reveal

In the world of storytelling, there are various archetypes for characters. Depending on your personal preference and the kind of story you want to tell, these character types can make an enormous difference in how your story comes across. What characteristic of an epic hero does the excerpt reveal? Perhaps one of the most popular types we often see in stories is that of the epic hero. In general, this refers to a type of protagonist with some strength, nobility, and bravery that allows them to undertake heroic tasks. Many different characteristics help define what makes an epic hero.

Supernatural Powers

The first characteristic we see in our excerpt is that the hero possesses some supernatural power. We don’t know exactly what this power is, but it sounds as if it’s a skill that’s necessary for the hero to complete their task.

If a character doesn’t have some particular skill or miraculous ability, it’s unlikely they’d be able to accomplish anything heroic. Often, characters that fit the epic hero archetype possess some magical power. This can be anything from the power to control fire to the ability to see into the future or even a skill that allows them to be highly gifted fighters. Whatever skill the character has serves as a useful plot device that helps them on their journey.

A Task That Requires Bravery

The second quality of the epic hero we see in this excerpt is that they have a task requiring bravery. We don’t know what this task is yet, but it needs to be something that would scare most people. This could be anything from fighting a dragon to jumping off a cliff to confronting a monster threatening the entire world.

At this point, we don’t know the hero’s task, but it needs to be something that not just anybody would be willing to do. A great example is King Arthur’s classic legend and the Knights of the Round Table. In this legend, the knights gather to fight an evil sorcerer known as Merlin and his army of monsters. This is a perfect example of a hero needing to engage in a task that requires bravery.

What are Noble Actions and Character Traits?

The third characteristic of the epic hero in the excerpt is that their actions throughout the story are noble, and their character traits are positive. This can be anything from being selfless to being compassionate or even having a sense of honor and justice. If a character shows noble actions and positive traits throughout the story, they’ll likely be considered heroes.

It’s important to note that just having noble actions and positive traits doesn’t mean that a character is an epic hero. After all, almost every good character in a story can be seen as noble and have positive traits. What makes epic heroes different is that they have these noble actions and traits, but they also have the bravery and supernatural ability we saw earlier.

What is Great Sacrifice?

The fourth and final characteristic in the excerpt is that the hero is willing to make a great sacrifice. We don’t know this sacrifice, but it must be significant. This could be as simple as taking a risk and putting yourself in harm’s way or as significant as dying for the sake of others.

The hero needs to make sacrifices because it helps define them as the story’s hero. After all, a hero is meant to be somebody willing to put their life on the line for others. Although it’s rare for the hero to die, it sometimes happens. If this happens, it’s considered a tragic, heroic ending.
