If you’ve ever been curious whether fish can have strokes, the answer is yes; they can – as well as many other weird habits! Check out our article here to learn more.

WHAT IS A STROKE IN A FISH?

A stroke is a sudden interruption of flow in the bloodstream to the brain. This interruption can cause damage to the brain, which can have various effects depending on how bad the damage is. A build-up of gas bubbles can cause a stroke in a fish in the bloodstream, a bacterial infection, or low oxygen levels in the water.

CAN FISH HAVE STROKES? DO ALL FISH HAVE STROKES?

Yes and no! Some types of fish can have strokes, while others cannot. Goldfish, for example, cannot have strokes because they do not have a blood-brain barrier. This means that blood cannot flow into their brain, which means they can never have a stroke.

Trout and salmon have blood-brain barriers, so that they could have strokes theoretically. However, fish are designed to be able to release excess gas in their bloodstream through their gills. Therefore, a bubble-type stroke is far less likely in fish than it is in humans. A bacterial type of stroke, however, could potentially happen in fish.

Why Would A Fish Have A Stroke?

There are multiple ways a fish could have a stroke, but the most likely cause is bubbles in the bloodstream. If a fish has a build-up of gas in its arteries, there is a chance that the bubble could travel to the brain and cause a stroke there.

Another way a bubble-type stroke could occur is if something in the water lowers the oxygen level. If the oxygen level drops below a certain threshold, the fish’s brains could be affected by the low oxygen level and have a stroke.
